02/20/2010 - Laramie, WY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Looking to keep pace with league-leading New Mexico, the 16th-ranked BYU Cougars invade Laramie for a Mountain West Conference showdown with the Wyoming Cowboys.
The Cougars are sporting a stellar 24-3 overall record, but trail the Lobos (10-2) in the league standings by a half game at 9-2. BYU enters this contest a winner of two straight and four of its last five games. Dave Rose's squad kept within striking distance of New Mexico, which the team faces next weekend in Provo, with a 92-70 blasting of Colorado State on Wednesday.
The Cowboys have struggled to lasso many victories this season are in jeopardy of finishing in the conference cellar, sitting just above Air Force (1-10) at this time. Wyoming enters this weekend with a six-game losing streak in tow, falling to 2-10 in the MWC with Wednesday's 83-61 whipping at the hands of New Mexico.
BYU holds a 102-69 advantage in this series and has won 10 straight meetings, including an 81-66 decision in Provo on January 20th.
BYU has chalked up 24 wins this season thanks to dominating play at both ends of the court. Offensive consistency is the first thing that stands out, as the Cougars are converting an impressive 49.2 percent from the floor, leading to a hefty 82.7 ppg (fifth in the nation). A +19.1 scoring margin also ranks among the nation's best (second behind only Kansas heading into the week). Opponents are managing a mere 63.7 ppg and are shooting under 40 percent from the field (.395). Scoring depth is apparent with four players currently averaging double digits. Jimmer Fredette is the best of the bunch and leads the Mountain West in scoring at 21.5 ppg. Jackson Emery is a distant second on the team at 12.3 ppg, followed by Tyler Haws and Jonathan Tavernari, who add 11.4 and 10.3 ppg, respectively. Fredette and Emery are quite the lethal long range due, combining for 121 of the team's 221 three-pointers thus far. In the lopsided win at Colorado State this week, Fredette was once again unstoppable. He connected on 12-of-22 shots from the floor, including six three-pointers en route to a 36-point performance. Emery poured in 16 points, while Noah Hartsock had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. BYU shot .517 from the floor in the game, including an impressive 12-of-25 from behind the arc (.480).
Wyoming is going to struggle to match BYU's intensity at either end of the floor. The Cowboys aren't all that explosive, averaging a modest 73.4 ppg on just .438 shooting, while allowing a generous 75.7 ppg. To make matters worse, the team is without the services of leading scorer Afam Muojeke (16.8 ppg) and A.J. Davis (10.0 ppg). Muojeke has been out since late January with a knee injury and Davis has missed time of late due to personal reasons. That leaves the task of scoring to Adam Waddell (10.1 ppg), Desmar Jackson (9.9 ppg) and Djibril Thiam (9.7 ppg). The Cowboys were simply no match for conference- leading New Mexico this week, as the team turned the ball over 15 times, and shot just .423 overall. Arthur Bouedo led the way with 17 points. Thiam chipped in with 10, followed by Jackson's nine.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.
Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.
El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.
MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds.
Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.
New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.
Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
