Harvick wins race, Edwards clinches Busch title

11/03/2007 - Fort Worth, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Kevin Harvick won Saturday's O'Reilly Challenge Busch Series race at the Texas Motor Speedway and an 11th-place finish from Carl Edwards clinched his first Busch Series championship.

The No.21 RCR Chevrolet crossed the finish line 3.486 seconds ahead of Kyle Busch. The victory was Harvick's sixth of the season and 32nd of his Busch career which put him in second place all-time, behind only Mark Martin's 47 wins.

"It's been a lot of fun to drive this Auto Zone Chevrolet and this place has been really good to us," said Harvick.

Pole winner David Reutimann brought the field to the green flag, but surrounded by Nextel Cup superstars, he didn't last there for long. First Tony Stewart, who qualified second, got around the outside and led the first lap by about six inches. Then Busch cruised past Reutimann before the first caution flag appeared on lap four.

Stewart quickly opened up a big lead on Busch, building the margin to over two seconds by lap 16. But a caution flag on lap 21 sent everyone down pit lane. There Busch used a two-tire stop to beat Stewart off pit lane as did Matt Kenseth.

However, Stewart wasn't content to sit in third. He caught Kenseth in two laps and on lap 34 sailed underneath Busch for the lead. Reutimann also went around Busch who faded all the way to seventh. But no one was as fast at Stewart who had the lead at about two seconds by lap 40.

Second place Reutimann suddenly slowed as his right-front tire went flat and he was forced to pit under green. He was now a lap down to Stewart, who's lead was up to 3.695 second over new second place Denny Hamlin.

The lead was more than six seconds at lap 100 as no one could make a run at Stewart, who led 85 laps so far. Meanwhile, Edwards was just cruising along in seventh place, easily good enough for him to clinch the Busch Series title since he only needed to finish 36th or better.

Stewart's lead was more than seven second with 90 laps to go when he tried to pass Kyle Krisiloff, but struck the left-rear corner of the No.14 Ford. It damaged Stewart's right-front fender.

On the next few laps, Harvick chopped two second off Stewart's lead as the No.18 tried to check out the damage.

It seemed as if it was having an effect as Harvick, Hamlin and Greg Biffle kept up the pressure. On lap 123 the gap was under four seconds and still dropping. It was completely gone when debris in turn three forced NASCAR to throw the caution flag on lap 125.

On the stop, Stewart's crew repaired the damage and he returned still on the lead lap, but in 13th place.

The new leader was Hamlin with Biffle, Busch and Harvick just behind. Biffle and Harvick got around Hamlin for the lead while Stewart was still stuck in traffic and looking very mortal.

Meanwhile, on lap 138, with enough cars out of the race, Edwards' first NASCAR Busch Series title was assured.

"I have to thank my guys," said Edwards after the race. "I have to thank everybody who let me drive their race cars. It's amazing to be the Busch Series champion. I can't tell you how excited I am and how far I've come because of those people."

Forty laps remaining and Biffle built his lead over Harvick to 1.488 seconds. Harvick fought back, however, cutting it to under a second. Then Biffle suddenly slowed and headed down pit lane with what he thought was a tire going down. The team changed four tires, but when they looked at the old ones, there was no leak.

Harvick inherited the lead and a two-second margin on Busch. Stewart, meanwhile was only in eighth place and appeared not to be a threat after being so dominating early on.

Harvick expanded the lead to three seconds with 10 laps to go and cruised to the win.

The next race in the series is set for Saturday, November 10th at the Phoenix International Raceway.

Football Betting: Defensive Rookie of the Year Awards

Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.

Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.

Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.

Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.

Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.

All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.

A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.
