Sharapova leads top seeds into semifinals

08/11/2007 - Carson, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Russian Maria Sharapova led a charge of the top four seeds into the semifinals at the $600,000 East West Bank Classic on Friday.

The top-seeded Sharapova, fresh off her title in San Diego, managed to oust ninth-seeded fellow Russian and defending Carson titlist Elena Dementieva 6-3, 6-4. Serbian Jelena Jankovic, the second seed, needed three sets to dispose of promising Belarusian Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2.

The two-time major runner-up Dementieva topped Jankovic in last year's finale here.

Third-seeded Serb Ana Ivanovic toppled Russian beauty Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 6-4 and fourth-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova escaped Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-1 on the hardcourts at the Home Depot Center.

The 22-year-old Jankovic, who already has four tour titles this year, will face Ivanovic in the semifinals. Sharapova will tangle with Petrova.

The 2007 Carson champ will collect just over $88,000.
