Storms end play in New Orleans

04/23/2010 - Avondale, LA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Heavy storms forced the suspension of Friday's second round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen (66), last week's Heritage playoff loser Brian Davis (66) and Alex Cejka (67) finished their second rounds and were tied for the lead at seven-under 137.

Englishman Greg Owen is two-under in his second round and seven-under par on the 18th tee. First-round leader Jason Bohn never hit a shot on Friday, but is still part of the lead at minus-seven.

At 1:57 p.m. (et), lightning in the area forced the suspension of play. Heavy rain accompanied the thunder and lightning and the TPC Louisiana became flooded and unplayable.

Tournament officials tried to wait the storm out, but 2 1/2 inches of rain fell. At one point, the players were allowed to hit balls on the range, but they were brought back in with another storm on the horizon.

At 6:21 p.m., the decision was made to call play for the day. Only 47 players completed the second round and everyone else will return at 8:30 a.m. Saturday to resume play.

The problem the tournament will have in trying to catch up is that the forecast is not good for Saturday either. In anticipation of inclement weather, tournament officials were planning to send the golfers out in threesomes off the first and 10th tees early in the morning for round three.

If the second round can somehow be completed on Saturday, there could be 36 holes on Sunday. Or, a Monday finish looms as a possibility.

Greg Chalmers shot a four-under 68 on Friday and is in sixth place at six- under 138. Fellow Aussie Jarrod Lyle and David Duval are both six-under for the championship and still on the golf course.

Janzen started with two birdies in his first three holes, then parred seven in a row. He rattled off three consecutive birdies from the 11th to move up the leaderboard.

At the par-five closing hole, Janzen reached the green in two. He two-putted from 33 feet for a final birdie that gave him a piece of first place.

Janzen has eight PGA Tour wins, including his two U.S. Opens. His last win on tour was the 1998 Open. Janzen's only made three cuts in nine starts so far in 2010, so his position might be a little surprising.

"I wouldn't say I'm surprised," said Janzen. "I'm happy about it because the last few tournaments I did go home on Friday wondering, you know, I played very well and couldn't make some -- just didn't make putts. And one or two missed shots is all it took to miss the cut and that's what happened."

Davis is back in the hunt one week after his playoff loss to Jim Furyk in Hilton Head. Davis called a penalty on himself on the first extra hole that all but assured Furyk the title.

On Friday, the Englishman was only one-under after three birdies and two bogeys over his first nine hole -- the back side at the TPC Louisiana. He notched five birdies in his first seven holes on the second nine, including some long putts, and matched Janzen and Cejka in the clubhouse.

"Yesterday was a tough day for me," Davis acknowledged. "First round back after last weekend and what's been going on this week, I was delighted to shoot 71 yesterday. Hit some good shots and holed a couple of putts, and I got up-and-down the last, which was nice. And it puts me in good position for the weekend."

Cejka recorded six birdies and was alone in front at eight-under par. But a bogey at the par-three 17th knocked him down into the logjam atop the leaderboard.

Owen had two birdies and no bogeys with the par-five 18th to go.

Chris Riley posted a six-under 66 on Friday and is in at five-under 139. Jason Dufner just started his second round and Jeff Overton hasn't played at all, but the two are both at minus-five.

NOTES: This is the 10th of 18 PGA Tour events in 2010 to experience some sort of play stoppage due to weather...Defending champion Jerry Kelly is two-under par for the championship and through two holes of his second round...Bill Lunde, Vance Veazey and Tim Wilkinson withdrew during the weather delay.

LaDainian Tomlinson Favorite to be 2007 NFL MVP

With the first NFL preseason game less than two weeks away, it is time to start thinking about football once again at MySportsbook.com. Reigning NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson is currently the 5-1 co-favorite to win the award again alongside Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning.

This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone after his all out assault on the record books last season. For those suffering from amnesia or were under a rock last football season, all L.T. did last season was set the NFL record for rushing touchdowns (28), total touchdowns (31) and total points scored (186) to go along with his 1815 rushing yards and 508 receiving yards. At 6-1, Tom Brady is next in line which isn’t surprising considering all of the firepower the Pats added over the off-season. With the addition of Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth and Wes Welker; it would be quite difficult for Brady’s numbers not to improve from last years 3529 yards and 24 touchdowns. There appears to be some decent value in Drew Bees at 10-1 considering he probably would have won the award last year if it wasn’t for L.T.’s record breaking season.

There is no reason to think the Saints will come back to earth this season and playing in a weak NFC, they should have as good a shot as any to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. At 15-1, Donovan McNabb could also be worth a look. Remember, many felt he was the MVP of the first half of the season before going down with a season ending injury. Reportedly, he is in great shape and well ahead of schedule to return to form. Also, he could have some added motivation to put up big numbers this season with the Eagles using their first pick in the draft on McNabb’s future successor Kevin Kolb.
