03/01/2008 - Cincinnati, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The ninth-ranked Xavier Musketeers have already clinched at least a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season title, and they carry a 10-game win streak into tonight's clash with the George Washington Colonials.
Not much has gone right for GW this season, as the team is just 9-14 overall and 5-8 in conference play. The Colonials are currently riding a three-game win streak, however, which includes an 85-68 decision over Rhode Island on Wednesday. Still, they enter tonight's tilt with a 1-10 record in true road games.
As for Xavier, it beat Dayton last Sunday by a 57-51 final and hasn't lost a game since the middle of January. The Musketeers, who are 14-1 at home, suffered their lone home setback against Tennessee, currently the top-ranked team in the nation.
Xavier beat George Washington by a 74-66 final back on January 19th, and the Musketeers own a 21-9 advantage in the all-time series.
Damian Hollis scored 22 points for George Washington in the victory over Rhode Island on Wednesday. Noel Wilmore was even more impressive, however, as the reserve nailed 7-of-9 three-pointers off the bench and finished with 24 points. Rob Diggs ripped down 11 rebounds for the Colonials, who shot 13-of-27 from behind the arc and finished with 18 assists against only seven turnovers. The positives overshadowed a 23-12 deficit in points from the foul line. Generating offense has proven to be a major problem for GW this season, as the team is posting only 63.9 ppg on 41.6 percent shooting from the field. Diggs leads the team with 13.9 ppg, and Wynton Witherspoon adds 11.1 ppg. Maureece Rice was expected to be one of the most productive players in the A-10, but he is averaging only 9.7 ppg while shooting 35 percent from the floor.
Through 28 outings, Xavier is scoring 76.5 ppg while limiting the opposition to 62.2 ppg on 40.1 percent shooting from the floor. The Musketeers are outrebounding foes by 5.9 rpg, a key to their success. It is hard to find many teams more balanced offensively than Xavier, as the club has five double-digit scorers in the lineup. Josh Duncan leads the pack with 11.6 ppg, while Drew Lavender is scoring 11.2 ppg to go along with 123 assists against 49 turnovers. B.J. Raymond and Derrick Brown are both scoring 10.8 ppg, while C.J. Anderson checks in with 10.5 ppg. Stanley Burrell's average has fallen to 9.9 ppg, as the team has had six double-digit scorers for much of the season. In the hard- fought win over Dayton on Sunday, Duncan had 14 points off the bench for the Musketeers, who earned a 17-8 edge in points from the foul line and held the Flyers to 37.7 percent shooting from the floor.
