03/06/2010 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The 20th-ranked Temple Owls are out to secure at least a piece of the Atlantic 10 regular-season championship today, as they clash with the George Washington Colonials at the Liacouras Center.
The Owls are currently tied with Xavier for first place in the A-10 standings at 13-2 and that means a win today would give Temple at least a share of its record ninth league regular-season title and first since 2001-02. Furthermore, a victory would also land the Owls the top seed in the upcoming league tourney, as they won the only meeting with Xavier during the season.
Winners of six straight, Temple is returning from a crucial two-game road trip that ended with a big 57-51 win at Saint Louis on Wednesday. Now at a healthy 25-5 overall, the Owls head back home, where they have gone 12-1, including a perfect 7-0 against conference foes.
GW, on the other hand, had won four of five games before suffering an 80-71 loss to a slumping Saint Joseph's club on Wednesday. The Colonials are now just 6-9 within the conference and that has them tied with Duquesne for ninth place.
As far as the all-time series goes, Temple has a 48-16 lead over GW and that includes a 63-53 victory in last season's meeting.
Defense was lacking for GW on Wednesday, as it permitted SJU to shoot a scorching 58.8 percent from the floor in an 80-71 setback. The Colonials were also outdone from beyond the arc, where they went just 5-of-17 compared to a 9-of-15 showing by the Hawks. Joseph Katuka scored a career-high 15 points in the loss, while Tony Taylor and Damian Hollis chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Hollis currently leads the squad in scoring at 13.3 ppg and his 4.9 rpg average may not be all that spectacular, but it's good enough to pace the team in that department as well. At 11.8 ppg, Lasan Kromah is the only other player on the roster currently producing double figures for GW.
In a defensive battle, the Owls were able to come out on top thanks to a great effort on the boards, as they dominated SLU, 36-23, in a 57-51 win on Wednesday. Temple also held a 13-4 edge in free-throw points and that certainly helped its cause. Lavoy Allen registered a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead the charge, while Juan Fernandez had 17 points. Ryan Brooks got involved with 13 points and he continues to pace the Owls in scoring with an average of 14.5 ppg for the season. Fernandez adds 12.4 ppg and 3.4 apg to the rotation, while Allen turns in a double-double of 11.7 ppg and 11.0 rpg. Allen has been a big part of the team's success on defense, as Temple is limiting foes to a mere 56.8 ppg and 38.0 percent shooting from the field.
