06/16/2010 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The National Football League has presented a proposal to its players association which promoted an increase of the league's regular-season slate from 16 to 18 games.
The presentation was made at the league offices in New York City during a collective bargaining session on Wednesday, according to NFL.com.
Mark Murphy, who serves as president of the Green Bay Packers as well as part of the league's negotiating team, said that if the players' association happens to welcome the proposal, it wouldn't be accepted until 2012 at the earliest.
He stated that the NFL might consider several factors to make it palatable for the players: reducing the number of preseason games from four to two in order to accommodate the extra pair of regular-season games per team, adjusting roster sizes and rules surrounding injured reserve, along with adding a bye week at the start of the season.
Murphy also added that it will not be likely that the NFL will act without the players' association approval -- a move that will certainly damage the rapport between the two sides with a collective-bargaining agreement set to expire after this season.
League owners have yet to vote on any change in the number of regular-season contests, but commissioner Roger Goodell has spoken out in favor of an increase in the past.
However, George Atallah who spoke on behalf of the NFLPA, said that the players have expressed concerns over potential injury risks, financial compensation and post-career health care with the potential increase in the number of games.
The NFL last expanded its regular-season schedule prior to the 1978 season, from 14 to the current 16 games. The USFL, which fielded teams from 1983-85, contested its three seasons with all teams playing 18 games in the regular season during a spring-summer slate.
